I got the chance to demo next years Goliath Sluff’s last week in Morzine. Although the resort isn’t known for its off piste I did a season there when I was 17 and know where to go when it does snow. And it did snow. :)

First up, these skis surprised me how easy they were to turn, they feel stiff under foot but the softer tip initiates turns easily. Definitely an easy going ski if you want to cruise. However once you open them up they feel very stable.

Piste: The Goliath’s surprised me on the hardpack. The edge grip was very good once locked into a carve, even on really hard stuff. I felt that you could really load the tip up on the exit of the turns and they rebounded you into the next turn beautifully. Very fun if it’s soft enough to get the edge in. Short turns were also good on steeper pitches, very light, nimble and easy to ski. The narrow, semi twin, tail washes out easily if you want to scrub speed. I actually found I was leaving my piste skis, 175 trouble maker’s, at the chalet as I was having more fun on the goliath’s. If the snow is soft enough to get an edge in on the big skis, who needs 80mm waist?

Crud/heavy/skier chopped: Most of the week was spent skiing heavy cut up snow off the Piste. The Goliath has a small ‘early rise’ tip starting (I think) 210mm down the ski, and a fairly tapered design which really keeps the tips up. I dropped several small (10-15footers) into skier cut crap and the tips would just plough through everything and return to the surface. I really skied the tips in all snow conditions off-piste and never sunk a tip. Several times I jumped off something blind, and when noticing the skied-out, flat and/or moguly (is that a word?) landing I instinctively thought ‘rider down’, but every time the skis just stomped down and I rode out, giggling.

Unfortunately I didn’t really get much powder, but in the odd turn it did lighten up, the skis were amazing. But what 100mm ski with a big tip isn’t?

I did mess around with the domo binders a bit; I took them back a bit and forward. The mount line does seem spot on although they were fun forward, mainly for just dicking around spinning, which is not really what these skis are for. The tail is perfect size for billy goating and riding switch to the lift, it was also surprisingly big enough to ride through 8inch of fresh on the piste, but defiantly not for landing in anything deep as the tail is so narrow.

I have never ridden a true reverse/reverse, reverse camber or even tip rocker ski. But I will be now, just the smallest bit of rocker, not really rocker, more ‘progressive tip’ I suppose, but anyway, whatever it’s called my tips didn’t sink at all. Which I enjoyed.

At the end of the day, any ski that has you giggling like a 9yr girl all the way down the hill can’t be bad. The only think I would like to change on the ski is the radius; I would like it a bit bigger than the 23m, maybe 28m? That’s just nit picking anyway as I wouldn’t want to add to the waist, nor take from the tip. Off topic but, does anybody know how much you would have to add/take from a ski to change the radius by a few m?

Overall I want to buy these skis and mount with duke’s for next seasons everyday ski, unfortunately I have no money as I’m moving to whistler for the year next week. At least I’ve got a good reason for being broke? Actually I haven’t, it’s because Im stupid and messed up my tax refund. Ohh well…..
